The unique nanocomposite paper-like material for space, nuclear power plants and semiconductor production

Scientists of the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (SPbGUPTD) have developed a nanocomposite material from glass and basalt nanofibers, which has no analogues. The material is similar to paper, but has a whole range of properties: it is durable, resistant to aggressive environments, radiation, is a dielectric, sound insulator, and absorbs and filters liquids well.

This paper-like material is created using traditional paper production technology. However, unlike cellulose fibers, mineral fibers are not held together in bulk. Therefore, we had to solve this problem by selecting special binders with similar properties. And we managed to do it,” said the author of the development, Professor of the Department of Paper and Cardboard Technology of St.

The production of such a nanomaterial in Russia for the needs of the nuclear, defense, aerospace, chemical, pharmaceutical and radio-electronic industries will make it possible to force out expensive imported materials with similar properties from the Russian market. The state corporation Rosatom has already shown interest in the development: the new material will be required for the construction of nuclear power plants.

The scientists of SPbGUPTD tested their nanocomposite material when creating "clean rooms" for the production of semiconductors, drugs and biological products, and other high-tech products. The result demonstrated its high efficiency.
